Apparent consumption of steel products in Brazil ended 2016 at 18.2 million tons, according to Instituto Aço Brasil (Brazilian Steel Institute), which represents the national steel mills. In 2017, the institute believes that consumption will rise to about 18.5 million tons. The predictions were given by the entity at the end of November 2016, during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Instituto Aço Brasil, the apparent national consumption of steel products was 2.8 million tons in the first two months of 2017, showing expansion of 5.5% compared to the same period of last year.
Imports in February 2017 rose 83% in volume (161 thousand tons) and 25.5% in value (US $ 133 million) in relation to the same month of 2016. The apparent consumption observed in the second month of 2017 reached 1, 4 million tons, surpassing the result for the same period of 2016 by 2.5%.
