Barley
Brazil consumes annually 1.2 million tonnes of barley malt. The offer is guaranteed equally by domestic production, direct import of Mercosur (the entry into the country happens by dry ports) and shopping in other countries, mainly from Europe, according to the National Union Brewery (Sindicerv).
As there is shortage of malt in the world market, the companies that provide the product increase imports to protect their markets. Only the Port of Paranaguá recorded a rise of 630% on imports of the product early this year. From January to the first fortnight of this month, the terminal Paranaense received 74,396 tons of malt, against 10,196 tons last year. The malted barley imported from Paranaguá comes mainly from Argentina, Uruguay, Belgium and Canada.
For the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food Supply (Seab), the main cause of the increase in imports of the product is in high consumption of beer. The wave of global heat caused the consumption of alcohol increase much, causing shortage of malt on the planet. Since Brazil produces less than 40% of the national barley demand, we need to import the product for the production of malt.
The Brazilian production of barley is concentrated in the South, with cultivation also in the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais and São Paulo, being grown on over 140,000 hectares, and production is approximately 380,000 tons. There are three malting facilities in operation, located in Rio Grande do Sul, Parana and Sao Paulo. The rest of the barley is imported from countries such as Argentina and Uruguay. Most of malting barley made by micro breweries are imported from countries with traditions such as Germany, Belgium, England, Czech Republic and United States.
